¿Puede el establishment político estadounidense declarar loco o incapaz a Donald Trump y destituirlo aplicándole la cuarta enmienda al artículo 25 de la Constitución? Teóricamente pudiera, pero es muy improbable que suceda. Es más difícil aún que el impeachment. Afortunadamente, las elecciones están a la vuelta de la esquina.
Prior to the Coronavirus pandemic, Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua’s 21st Century dictatorships were already in extreme crises. Their features of transnational organized crime, institutionalized violation of human rights and their nature as narco-states linked to terrorism, had placed them in a terminal situation of being spurned by their people and sanctioned by the international community. In the Coronavirus pandemic they are doing what they know best to do; they increment internal violence, falsify data and information, and escalate their conspiracy to destabilize the region’s democracies. The Coronavirus pandemic could be used to prolong the permanence in power of Castrochavist dictatorships, but it could also determine their quicker demise and the ending of the disgrace they represent.
But what happens when individuals in other nations do not value freedom as we do? Should they be forced to be free? Historically, it cannot be argued that freedom is a universal value. Freedom is most easily defined as having the ability to act without constraint. Freedom is related to, but not identical to the concept of liberty. To be free is to be self-determining; to have liberty is to be liberated from something. Liberty is associated with institutions; freedom is personal. Freedom may not be a universal value, but it is an enduring one.
¿Qué sucede cuando personas en otras naciones no valoran la libertad igual que nosotros? ¿Debemos obligarlos a ser libres?. Históricamente no puede afirmarse que la libertad es un valor universal. La libertad se define mas sencillamente como la capacidad de actuar sin restricciones. Libertad (Freedom) se relaciona, pero no es idéntica, al concepto de la libertad (Liberty). Desafortunadamente, en español solo contamos con la palabra libertad para ambos conceptos. Ser libre es decidir por uno mismo; tener libertad es ser liberado de algo. Tener libertad se asocia con instituciones; pero la libertad es personal. La libertad puede no ser un valor universal, pero es uno perdurable.
Las dictaduras del siglo XXI en las Américas que detentan el poder en Cuba, Venezuela y Nicaragua ya estaban en crisis extremas antes de la pandemia del coronavirus. Sus características delincuencia organizada trasnacional, violación institucionalizada de derechos humanos y narco estados vinculados al terrorismo, los pusieron en la situación terminal de ser repudiados por sus pueblos y sancionados por la comunidad internacional. En la pandemia del coronavirus hacen lo que saben, incrementan la violencia interna, falsifican la información y aumentan su conspiración para desestabilizar las democracias de la región. La pandemia del coronavirus puede servir para prolongar la permanencia de las dictaduras castrochavistas en el poder, pero también puede determinar su caída mas rápida y la terminación del oprobio que representan.
The quality of Uruguay’s leadership and the outstanding results of its pandemic control policies drove the “Fundación Libertad” chaired by Mario Vargas Llosa to issue a communique promoting the region wide adoption of Uruguay’s approach to combating Covid-19. In particular, “Fundación Libertad” emphasized the contrast between public policies in Uruguay and those adopted by Argentina which issued home arrest orders to its citizens; increased expenditures and killed economic activity. In a nutshell Argentina created the conditions to develop an economic Tsunami after Covid-19 is contained. And this will certainly make headlines. Uruguay on the contrary will most probably carry on unnoticed but its citizens are way happier than those of Argentina.
Fauda means “chaos” in Hebrew and Arabic. It is the name of a magnificent Netflix series. Is it a realistic series? Yes, but only in a certain way. Disbelief must be discarded, as is often the case in theater, and we must assume that the same secret war crew operates consistently without being detected in a small territory like Ramallah, which is a sort of city the size of a postage stamp. There is no human way for Arabs and Israelis to reach reasonable agreements. As long as the Palestinians dream of throwing the Jews to the sea, that’s not possible.
Pedro Luis Boitel fue un hombre de integridad absoluta. Reflexiona sobre un joven que combatió al régimen de Fulgencio Batista, que en el exilio retó las ambiciones de los Castro de controlar la información y que a su regreso a Cuba fue fiel al decir martiano, “solo la verdad nos pondrá la toga viril”. Las convicciones de Boitel eran tan fuertes y profundas que no temió la soledad inicial de su causa. La justicia y la libertad fueron sus baluartes. Mientras algunos de sus compañeros del Movimiento 26 de Julio se plegaron a los nuevos déspotas, él se internaba en un nuevo proceso que le tomaría la vida. A Boitel no lo encontró la muerte, la buscó. Marchó hacia ella con la conciencia de que el camino del deber es el más difícil, por eso hoy y siempre será uno de los símbolos de la resistencia del pueblo cubano en la lucha contra el totalitarismo.
The distraction created by the Coronavirus pandemic seems to prevent to see that Argentina is the new political and territorial base for conspiracy against democracies in the southern cone and a direct threat to topple, or in any way remove, Bolivia’s interim government. Democratic governments from Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, those who the Castrochavist Kirchnerism considers to be from “the right”, are under threats and efforts to destabilize them. The threatened leadership must, at least, reconcile the reality that Argentina with Fernandez and Kirchner has actively gone back to Castrochavism and is now a platform against the democracies of the Americas.
Alguien se habrá preguntado qué hubiese escrito Tito Livio en lo concerniente a Rómulo, a uno de los luchadores más exitosos en la construcción de la democracia en el continente. La Venezuela que edificó, hoy no existe. Qué hacer con los latinoamericanos, pues tienen siglos tratando de enseriarse, pero: Bolsonaro con sus locuras, Fernandez, la Vicepresidenta, enemiga. Perú, Ecuador y Colombia, económicamente debilitados. Chile, en las consecuencias negativas de la reelección. Bolivia, Morales casi regresando. Venezuela, ni hablar. El gobierno mandando y los venezolanos muriendo. Una historia que no termina. ¿Hasta cuándo Señor?
