Likewise, the Senate statement urges the United States government to support the Organization of American States (OAS)’ efforts to restore democracy and the rule of law in the country and “to instruct appropriate federal agencies to hold officials of the government of Venezuela accountable for violations of United States law and abuses of internationally recognized human rights.” The bill is now circulating in the US House of Representatives supporting OAS Secretary Luis Almagro in his effort to apply the OAS Democratic charter.

All these instances paint a picture of a continental leadership that falls short in this historic juncture and that concentrates on the trees failing to see the forest and its potential. They are leading the region into involution. And as the U.S. concentrates on its domestic agenda, the region seems to lack further incentives to search beyond the narrow horizons of daily challenges to initiate the journey of change and modernity.
If the region`s democratic leaders who are Heads of State in their respective countries continue their tolerance policy “yielding normalcy to dictatorships” they will be accomplices of the suffering, oppression, and misery of the people. The time has come to ask for explanations, ask for specific outcomes, and label as shameful the indifference, the convenience, the fear, or the complicity of American presidents in regard to dictatorships.
Estamos viviendo tal vez uno de los momentos más dramáticos de la Historia de la Iglesia y de la civilización. Que la Virgen de la Caridad, patrona de Cuba, nos otorgue el discernimiento necesario para ver, juzgar y actuar en función de la gravedad de esa inédita situación de confusión y auto demolición.
Si los líderes democráticos de la región, en ejercicio del poder, continúan su política de tolerancia que otorga “normalidad a las dictaduras”, serán cómplices del sufrimiento, la opresión y la miseria de los pueblos.
