Paradoxically enough the day Ms Delia Fiallo entered a new dimension our congress was going after the US born social media on the grounds of their capacity to disseminate falsehoods; facilitate pranks and undermine democracy. Ms Fiallo known as the Mother Of Telenovelas had also made waves in adoring audiences as they followed with impassionate loyalty every chapter of her telenovelas. And they dreamed of a better world, on the ability of good to defeat evil and on the transforming properties of true love. And by these means she would stir on every follower the best instincts, behavior and demeanor. In short, Ms Fiallo ignited in human beings the right to dream and to make dreams come true by means of hard work, kindness, disciplines and conviviality.
Fast forward to 2021 . As TV continues its slow but sustained decline and its place is taken over by perusal of digital media the world in which Ms Fiallo succeeded and shared her success with relatives , colleagues and fans collapsed. Soap Operas end telenovelas have been taken over by series that chant the macho virtues of drug traffickers and their ladies of the night. Criminal investigations and horrific crimes are dissected every day in our smart phone screens. Gruesome images of ghastly war crimes being committed live pop over chats and text messages. A sudden passion for vampire love, zombies charm and female violence makes waves at the Neilsen ratings. Twitter, Facebook et al are generous fountains of superficiality , vulgarity and outright lies. And the news dissemination departments are full of talking heads that care a little about facts and a lot about their personal views on every aspect of human life including those that were reserved for trained masters like quantum physics. We thus go to bed every night take by an state of anguish , anxiety, fear and confusion that undermines our belief in our individual ability to build a better world. Thus we are drawn into Dante’s Inferno every single day of our lives. But contrary to the times of the renaissance we lack a guide to take us out of this man made chamber of torture.
In these dark days there truly was no room for someone like Ms Fiallo who through her sheer talent successfully faced the challenges of economic distress; political upheaval in home country Cuba and uprooting into a country that had no interest in the literary genre she was beginning to master. One by one she defeated every monster that blocked her way to success as a telenovela writer. Talent, kindness and faith in her ability to conquer the TV world were her only weapons. And she played them masterfully!!Had she been born in this century she would most probably ended up prostrate in a psychoanalysis chair searching for the culprit of her predicament while all her characters would be fire walled on daily basis for lack of compliance with the predominant vision that two wrongs make a right. Indeed, it was time to go for Ms Fiallo!!
